The place where you can experience the illusion of moving in time is Swołowo, 14 km away from Słupsk.
The original buildings are dominated by "checkered houses" - residential and utility buildings with a half-timbered structure, black beams and white fillings. Dozens of better or worse preserved, more than a hundred years old objects of this type make Swołowo considered the capital of the "Checkered Land" - the area where this characteristic building is found.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the dominant element of the rural landscape in Pomerania was frame construction. In the quarters of the wooden structures of the buildings, wooden planks were inserted, which were wrapped with straw ropes and covered with clay. The surface of the quarters was whitewashed with lime, and the wooden beams were secured with tar. The symmetrical arrangement of the structure gave the buildings a lattice-like visual effect.
